PRESIDENT ADRIAN LAURIE PHF
Taking over as President of Brixham Rotary Club in the year commencing July 2020 was always going to be a challenge, given that we are in the grips of a global pandemic.
This year’s Rotary International theme of ‘Rotary Opens Opportunities’ is especially poignant due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it’s restrictions both Nationally and Internationally.
Many of our club for a variety of reasons are either shielding or self-isolating and along with the ban on face-to-face meetings this constrains our normal activities.
However, during the first 6 months running up to Christmas we managed to support the local community by providing donations to local charities.
We also managed to ensure that Father Christmas visited the children of Brixham on our Santa Sleigh at a time when it was thought that Christmas 2020 would be cancelled.
My overall aim for the year is to the wellbeing of our club and its continued existence at a time when members are not experiencing the fellowship and friendship which is at the very heart of a small club like Brixham.
We are conducting meetings via Zoom to encourage some form of normality. Council meetings, Speaker’s evenings and our famous Sundowner have meant that members can conduct business, be informed and share a glass of wine safely without leaving the comfort of their own sofa.
For the remaining 6 months I will strive to encourage the members to look forward to a better time, as we are progressively all vaccinated and prepared to work our way out of the pandemic.
We will continue to support local charities, community and friends and fellow Rotarians in our twinned Rotary club Carhaix in Western Brittany.
Keep safe and well.
